Chaos Theory and Leadership Studies: Exploring Uncharted Seas

John S. Bums, Ph.D.

Whitworth College Spokane WA

Physical scientists have been forced to reevaluate much of what they thought they knew about the universe because of the discovery and emerging development of chaos theory. Similarly social scientists have begun an exploration of chaos that promises to revolutionize the theories we use to understand leadership and management. Unfortunately much that is written about chaos is incredibly technical and suffers because there are few models available to explain the theory. This paper forwards a pedagogical model of the theory as well as a case study which illustrates how the model can be employed.
