Providing Leadership in Rural America: A Model for Community Colleges

Donna L. Burgraff

Marshall University

Executive Summary This article describes a community/business/education partnership, which was developed between a community college and a downtown revitalization program. The purpose of the partnership was to provide leadership training throughout an Appalachian community, thereby increasing the leadership in the local area. The process of developing the partnership is outlined, and its successes and lessons learned are also described. This partnership is a model for other rural communities that are suffering from a community-wide lack of leadership. Practical application of leadership theory and development is the focus of this article.
